Ampersand Answers: Momentum

When feelings meet action, steady momentum follows.

The Question:

How can I make momentum for myself?

&mpersand Answers:

As is so often the case in life, the word itself, despite the folk etymology I use, gives us a counterintuitive clue to momentum.

Most of us tend to think of momentum as motion, but more, really, as a reliable rhythm. More jogging than sprinting, but a reliable, sort of old, comfortable jeans tempo, one you can achieve, maintain, stop if needed, and return to without too much effort.

In the build-up to momentum though, it’s easiest to return to “the moment,” the present, where you are, who you are, and how you are right now, and ask, How do I feel?

Because it’s always feelings that act as the barometer of reality. Always. And, the feelings always win because they’re more primal than your thoughts. The good news is that thoughts create feelings which means you have some control over them.

If you don’t wanna in the moment, wait. Things might change by themselves. Or talk yourself into one action, one. Then maybe another one. Mr. Levine is right. The more feeling, the easier the action, the better the momentum.

Doesn’t all of life always return to the moment?
