Ampersand Answers: Getting to Happiness

Happiness is not by chance but by choice.

The Question:

How do I reach for happiness in my life?

&mpersand Answers:

You don’t. Happiness, despite all conditioning to the contrary, and believe me, it is vast, is an inside job.

In fact, I think this is one of the greatest secrets of a spiritual life:

Happiness is a choice.

It’s not random. It doesn’t come from externals. It’s actually not elusive, or conditional.

That’s the great mistake our species has made. We’ve decided, nearly unanimously, that happiness is conditional, meaning, it’s dependent upon certain external things.

It’s the I’ll be happy when … you fill in your own blank … I’ve lost ten pounds, I’m married, I’m divorced, I have kids, my xyz apologizes, so-and-so is president. I could go on and on and on.

But …

Happiness is only conditional if you think it is.

What if it isn’t?

As Jim Rohn says, not a chance, a choice. And that’s the secret … you get to choose to be happy … no matter what. Whether you’ve let go that ten pounds or made a million dollars on a deal or met the partner of your dreams.

We set ourselves up when we make happiness conditional, Belovèd. For what? Conditionality is a set-up for upset. (Clever the way that works, huh?)

I suggest you try an experiment for a week: choose happiness, no matter your circumstances, for seven days. Watch how you’re the one who makes it conditional, and choose to be happy anyway.

On that hangs the law and the prophets …
