Ampersand Answers: What Others Think
People will stare.
Make it worth their while.
5th Avenue jeweler Harry Winston
The Question:
How can I let go of what others seem to think of me?
&mpersand Answers:
I have a fondness for Harry Winston. His storefront is on Fifth Avenue near The Plaza Hotel, home to the most outré of all small girls, Eloise. Harry Winston is the jeweler who lends out millions of dollars’ worth of fine jewelry for awards ceremonies.
I loved his advice which goes along with the title of one of my all-time favorite books that I never read, but it sat on my shelf for years. It’s by Science of Mind minister Terry Cole Whittaker, and the title is What You Think of Me is None of My Business. Oooh, amen to that.
Because, Belovèd, and I’m not telling you something you don’t already know, people are going to stare, as Mr. Winston says. Let ’em. And remember this:
You definitely have the choice to make it worth their while.
You don’t really know what they’re thinking, even if it seems like you do.
You don’t need to give a hoot over what they think, whether you’re right or you’re wrong.
This question is a holdover from the days of keeping up with the Joneses, and all the codependency, and the craziness that goes with it, you can imagine.
This is not to say, go around harming others, being “brutally honest,” as a former friend of mine did. It is to say, MYOB, do what makes you happy, and let the mob stare.
