Speed Limit
In 14 years of writing Seeds, it’s only happened twice before—I’m sending out this Seed on my birthday. Today at 2:22 PM, I am 55. The speed limit, at long last.
Ever think about speed limits? Most of us treat them as though they’re minimums. You know, we need to be going at least that fast. On the Mass Pike, the speed limit signs are definitely minimums. Most of the drivers are going 80 most of the time! Not me.
In fact, speed limits are not minimums, Beloved. They’re speed caps—the top number you should be going. Why are speed caps posted? Well, smart people who know something about aerodynamics and weather and car tires figure them out. Posted speed limits optimize those issues so traffic proceeds apace safely for all.
At 55, I try not to be in a hurry any more. I plan my travel time generously, I go the speed limit. I also smell the coffee and the roses. I write the occasional haiku, and am in the middle of writing my eighth novel. I do what I can to enjoy life no matter what speed it’s flowing.
Happy Birthday to all those born on this (former) Columbus Day!
