SPIRIT is Mex’s inner mainstay. She guides every investigation with clues, nudges and ideas to get and keep Mex on the right track. Mex learns a lesson about herself in every book.
SERGEANT MICHAEL RYAN KELLEY is what Mex calls her favorite “Blue.” A career NYPD cop, he is her surrogate papa and often refers cases to Mex when the “real” detectives have given up.
VERONICA D’ALCANTARA is Mex’s Divine Right Partner. They meet on the Oklahoma! case, fall apart during Brigadoon, and come back together during Chicago. There are later complications, such as a poisoned apple.
WAVERLEY KING supplants Veronica in Scotland and Japan. A married woman, and one of the world’s most noted classical music conductors, she takes women lovers on the side.
FERRARO MORGAN-SMYTHE is Waverley’s husband, one of Mex’s major fans; he is key in Scotland.
GARETH B. HAWKINS is Mex’s stellar assistant. A trained criminologist, he makes finding Mex his first case. His support of Mex and his learning curve grow through the series.
SERAPHIM GROVES is a master actress who plays the gender slide with Mex, and offers her the opportunity to step more fully into who she is. Eventually, they’ll be married in Massachusetts on All Hallow’s Eve.
AMELIA STONE is Mex’s cabaret sensation Mama, the one who named Mex after her signature song, Mexicali Rose. She dies in Brigadoon Moon, and stays on the scene as a spirit guide.
GRANNY is Mex’s Gypsy grandmother, Lucia, who trained Mex in the use of intuition and as a healer. Her lavender scent wafts onto the scene when Mex needs help pronto.
PRUDENCE & MONEY are Mex’s longest-time companions. Prudence is long-haired white and Money is short-haired black—feline goddesses both.
